Engagement Photo Preparation: Outfits, Ring and Checklist
Engagement sessions are often the first time a couple is professionally photographed together — and a trial run for working with the wedding photographer. A little preparation makes them far more relaxed.

Decide what the photos are for
Engagement photos end up on save-the-dates, wedding websites, guest-book displays and walls. If you know you need a horizontal image for a website banner or space for text on a card, tell the photographer so they can compose for it.
Choose a location that means something
A place with personal significance — where you met, a favorite walk, your neighborhood — tends to produce more relaxed photos than a generic scenic spot. Check whether the location needs a photography permit, how busy it is at the planned time, and how far you will walk in your session shoes.
Coordinating two outfits
- Complement, don't match. Choose a shared palette and let each person wear different pieces within it.
- Match the formality. One person in a suit and the other in shorts reads as a mismatch.
- Plan one casual and one dressier look if your package allows an outfit change.
- Think about movement. Walking, sitting on steps and being lifted are common engagement poses; test that clothes allow them.
- Avoid busy patterns on both people; one subtle pattern is plenty.

Preparing the ring for close-ups
Ring detail shots are close-ups, and every mark shows.
- Clean the ring a day or two before; jewelers often clean rings free of charge.

- Get a manicure or at least tidy nails and cuticles on both people's hands.
- Bring the ring box if you would like it photographed.

A quick wipe before detail shots removes fingerprints. Gentler than household cleaners for most metals and stones.

Transporting outfits
If you are changing outfits at the location, bring clothes on hangers in garment bags, lay them flat in the car and keep shoes in a separate bag. A handheld steamer fixes creases if there is a power outlet nearby.

During the session
Most couples feel self-conscious for the first ten minutes. It helps to treat the session as time together rather than a performance: talk to each other, walk, laugh at the awkwardness. Photographers generally prompt interactions rather than hold static poses, and the in-between moments are often the best frames.

- Choosing a location an hour's drive away with no time buffer before sunset.
- Wearing brand-new shoes for a session with a lot of walking.
- Forgetting a warm layer for evening sessions.
- Not asking how the engagement images will be delivered, and whether printing rights are included.
