Family Photo Session Checklist: What to Bring
Family sessions have more moving parts than any other kind of shoot. Use this checklist in the week before to confirm the details, pack the bag and plan around children and weather.

A week before
- Confirm date, start time, location and where to park.
- Ask the photographer about the weather policy and a backup date.
- Share any must-have shots (grandparents with grandchildren, siblings together, a family pet).
- Mention anything the photographer should know: a child who dislikes loud noises, mobility needs, a family member who dislikes being photographed from one side.
- Finalize outfits using the family photo outfit guide, and try them on.
- Schedule the session around naps and meals if you have young children.
The night before
- Wash, press and hang every outfit; put them in garment bags.
- Pack the session bag (see below).
- Check the forecast and sunset time for outdoor sessions.
- Charge your phone and save the photographer's number.
What to pack
For everyone
- Water and non-staining snacks (avoid red juice, chocolate and crumbly food before photos)
- Lint roller, tissues, wet wipes
- Comb or brush, hair ties, clips
- A light layer for cool evenings
- Sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast, applied well before the session
For kids
- A complete spare outfit (or at least a spare top)
- A small favorite toy — useful for attention, but keep it out of shot
- A treat reserved for the end, as an incentive
- Diapers, changing supplies, pacifier
For outdoor locations
- A blanket to sit on
- Insect repellent for wooded or grassy areas
- Comfortable shoes for walking to the spot, plus the shoes you will wear in photos
- An umbrella, just in case
Items worth considering
Most of the list is already in your home. A few inexpensive items make a noticeable difference:
Garment bags
Keeps several outfits clean and uncreased in the car. Breathable fabric bags are better than plastic dry-cleaning covers for longer trips.
A diaper-bag-style organizer
Separate pockets for wipes, snacks and spare clothes save hunting through a bag while the light fades.
Water-resistant outdoor blanket
Keeps clothes dry on damp grass. Choose a plain color that fits your outfit palette so it can appear in photos.
Compact umbrella
A clear or neutral umbrella can even work as a prop if the weather turns.
On the day
- Feed everyone before you leave.
- Arrive ten minutes early so children can explore before photos start.
- Dress children last, or at the location, to avoid car-seat creases and spills.
- Let the photographer lead; parents repeating "smile!" often produces forced expressions.
- Keep expectations realistic. Candid moments with a restless toddler are often the favorite images.
After the session
Note the delivery date and how long the online gallery will be available. Download the full-resolution files and keep a backup in two places. When you are ready to print, see photo albums and frames for ideas.
